Braj Kishore Ravi, the most senior IPS officer holding the rank of DGP currently serving in Tamil Nadu, has opted for voluntary retirement just three months before his scheduled superannuation.
Ravi, who was set to retire on December 31 this year, has sent his notice for voluntary retirement to the state government, according to media reports. He is the second senior-most DGP ranked official from the TN cadre after Sanjay Arora, who is serving as Delhi Police Commissioner.
The reports quoted unnamed sources at police headquarters in Chennai. Sources said Ravi had opted for VRS as he was preparing to enter politics in his native state of Bihar.
About six months ago, there had been other reports in which Ravi himself was quoted as saying that he wants to join politics as a Mahagatbandhan candidate in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
His father late Tul Mohan Ram was a former MP (1962-1977) and a freedom fighter.
The 1989 batch IPS officer hails from Saharsa district in Bihar. He had worked with the UN peacekeeping force and headed the TN Fire and Rescue Services until recently.
He has done his BA in Sociology from Patna University and PostGraduate from the Delhi School of Economics, New Delhi.
As DGP Vigilance of TANGEDCO, Ravi was involved in monitoring corruption and malpractices in the state power utility. During his long career, he held various law and order responsibilities in the state police force.
The Tamil Nadu government is yet to accept Ravi’s voluntary retirement notice and relieve him from service. As per rules, the state DGP has to approve VRS applications for IPS officers. The government may try to convince Ravi to continue serving until his scheduled retirement date.
Another IPS officer of TN cadre, Karuna Sagar (1991 batch), has also joined the RJD in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Prasad Yadav and has started preparing for his forthcoming Lok Sabha polls. Follow channel on WhatsApp
