LUCKNOW: On a day, when a pall of gloom descended on Kortha village with the arrival of 27 bodies of those who lost their lives in a major road accident when a tractor-trolley fell into a waterbody in Ghatampur of Kanpur Dehat on late Saturday night, the police station house officer (SHO) of Saadh police station, which was nearest to the accident site, was suspended for alleged “dereliction of duty” with tractor driver still elusive of police net.
UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the accident survivors at the Halet hospital in Kanpur and also the bereaved families at Kortha village.
Meanwhile, in the wake of frequent road accidents resulting from tractor trollies being used to ferry the passengers as a mode of conveyance, the state government has ordered the respective district administrations government across the state to run a 10-day drive against the use of tractor trolleys to ferry passengers. The circular issued by the state government claims that those found flouting the rules would be slapped with a penalty of Rs 10000.
According to Kanpur DM Vishak G, Saadh police station SHO was suspended for dereliction of duty as the accident spot was near Bhadeuna village, barely a kilometre from the Saadh police station, but the SHO reached there after around an hour.
According to the eyewitnesses, the tractor was being driven at a high speed despite requests by the passengers to slow down, Additional Director General of Police (Kanpur zone) Bhanu Bhaskar shared with media persons. “Subsequently, the driver lost control over the tractor and it overturned. The women and children came under the trolley,” he said.
The tractor-trolley was on its way to Ghatampur after the passengers attended a ‘mundan’ ceremony at the Chandrika Devi temple in Unnao.
CM Adityanath visited the village, which is 4-5 kilometres from the accident site, and consoled the families of the victims. “It is a tragic incident. The government, in order to stop such accidents, has been running many awareness programmes from time to time. I had appealed yesterday that road safety should be a subject of priority for us,” said the CM.
“Today, I had called the officials of the transport corporation, and have categorically told them that there is a need to run a comprehensive awareness programme on road safety, and there is a need to connect the schools, colleges and all the stakeholders,” he said.
Meanwhile, Kortha village sunk into a sea of tears with screams of grief everywhere as the bodies of 26 villagers, who were killed in the road accident on the highway in Ghatampur area, arrived after post-mortem examination in the early hours of Sunday.
Every family of the Nishad community in the village which houses 200 to 250 homes, had lost one or the other. Twenty-seven people, mostly women and children, had died and around 20 sustained critical injuries when a recklessly driven tractor-trolley carrying around 35 to 40 people fell into a roadside pond on the highway in the Saadh area of Ghatampur.
Besides CM Yogi, politicians, officials and the local populace turned up at the village to pay tributes to departed souls. Union Minister Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, who reached the village to console the family, broke down and wept. UP Cabinet Minister Rakesh Sachan, Minister of State Ajit Singh Pal and MLA Abhijit Singh Sanga also reached the village with the dead bodies. They were consoling the family by visiting every house assuring all help from the government.
Locals thronged the mishap site in Saadh village and later the Dyodhi Ghat to see the mass funeral. The district administration has requested the families of the deceased in the village to perform the last rites together at the Dyodhi Ghat.
