GUWAHATI: Assam MP Maulana Badruddin Ajmal asked the state’s BJP-led government to stop “bulldozer raj” and deal with anti-national elements legally.“If somebody is found doing something wrong, go by the law. Arrest him, jail him or hang him. We will have nothing to say. But stop this bulldozer raj,” Ajmal, the chief of minority-based All India United Democratic Front, told reporters.He urged the government not to demolish madrassas stating that they are public properties. In the past month, the state government brought down three madrassas using bulldozers for reasons including sheltering Islamic fundamentalist elements, some of them being Bangladeshi nationals.Altogether 37 alleged operatives of terror organisations al-Qaeda in the Indian subcontinent and Bangladesh-based Ansarullah Bangla Team were also arrested.Ajmal linked the demolition of the madrassas to politics. He said he was 100% certain that the actions were being taken by the BJP eyeing the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.“Such acts are against the age-old brotherly relations that we Indians have shared with one another. Lok Sabha election is coming up and the incidents are election-centric. Let people live peacefully,” the MP said.“The BJP needs 10% of the Muslim votes in 2024 to be able to retain power at the centre. So, it will do everything possible to scare the Muslims of the country and get their votes,” he added.On Wednesday, the Bongaigaon district administration demolished a madrassa on the grounds that it was unsafe and being used for multiple activities without proper documents.The action was taken after Mufti Hafizur Rahman, a teacher of the madrassa, was arrested for his alleged involvement in “jihadi” activities.Recently, the state government handed the cases of the arrested “jihadis” to National Investigation Agency. The agency had filed a charge sheet against eight of them two days ago.
