GUWAHATI: The flood situation in Assam deteriorated on Thursday with nearly 29,000 people reeling under the deluge in three districts of the state due to incessant rain, according to an official bulletin.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Thursday had said that due to incessant rain in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, the water levels of many rivers are rising and that 25 villages and other areas under 10 revenue circles in Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Cachar, Nalbari, and Kamrup (Metro) districts are flooded.

According to the daily flood report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 28,800 people were hit due to floods in Dhemaji, Dibrugarh and Lakhimpur districts. It added that the flood waters have submerged 215.57 hectares of cropland in the flood-affected districts.

Lakhimpur is the worst hit with over 23,500 people affected, followed by Dibrugarh with more than 3,800 people and Dhemaji with almost 1,500 people affected, the report added.

The ASDMA said that the district administration of flood-hit Lakhimpur district has set up three relief distribution centres and that rescue teams have been deployed to rescue the flood-affected people.

6,307 animals, including poultry, have also been affected by the flood.

The flood waters on Thursday damaged four embankments and four roads in Dhemai, Biswanath, Goalpara, and Lakhimpur districts.

The ASDMA said a few landslide incidents were also reported in Cachar and Kamrup (Metro) districts due to rainfall in the last couple of days.

Meanwhile, AAP national convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday asked his party workers in Assam to help the victims in flood-affected areas.

Taking to Twitter, Kejriwal said, “Heavy rains and floods are affecting life in Assam,” “I appeal to all the local workers of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to serve the victims in the flood-affected districts and provide all possible help to the administration in rescue and relief work,” he added.
