Kakinada: Once in the deepest pits of depression, 52-year-old Goli Shyamala took to swimming to regain her sanity. She has now recovered so much that she swam in the Bay of Bengal from Visakhapatnam to Kakinada, covering 30 kilometres.Shyamala started on December 28 from Vizag and reached Kakinada Beach on the afternoon of January 3. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, the swimmer said she had been a successful artist who sketched animation films which became a hit after being telecast by a media channel. However, after 26 episodes, she started suffering losses and went into a deep depression. She started recovering from depression after she took to swimming. On the path to successful recovery, Shyamala has swum 30 km from Ramasethu to Sri Lanka in 2021 in 13 hours 43 minutes. “The same year, I swam from Santa Catalina Island to Los Angeles in 12-degree cold water covering 36 kilometres in 19 hours. In February 2024, I swam 50 km to Kiltan Island in Lakshadweep in hot waters. I am now happy that I have successfully swam in the Bay of Bengal from Visakhapatnam to Kakinada,” she stated. While swimming in the Bay of Bengal, Shyamala had been accompanied by three boats with a crew of 14 members. When a whale came to a distance of within 10 metres from her, the crew pulled her into the boat for safety. When she resumed swimming, a turtle accompanied her for a long distance, she recalled recounting her experiences.Shyamala’s husband Mohan is happy that not only has she recovered but is now making achievements at sea. Syamala and Mohan have a son Pawan Vihari who is doing his B. Tech. in Hyderabad.
