Hyderabad: A 27-year-old woman, Deepika, died by suicide at her residence in KPHB on Tuesday, allegedly due to dowry harassment according to a complaint filed by her father Satyanarayana.Kukatpally ACP K. Srinivas Rao said Deepika was married to one Venugopal six years ago and the family paid dowry. Over the years, Venugopal allegedly pressured her to transfer ownership of a piece of land registered in her name. The complainant also stated that Venugopal ill-treated Deepika. Man arrested for stealing rental carsHyderabad: Jagadgirigutta police arrested one Appari Vishwa Phanindra of AP for stealing rental cars, Balanagar DCP K. Suresh said. Phanindra’s associates Chivakala Ramana, Jakkamsetty Satyanarayana and Reddy Venkatesh were at large.Police recovered 26 stolen vehicles worth Rs.2.5 crore from Phanindra’s possession.The scam came to light after one Shashidhar, who runs a travels company, lodged a complaint on January 27. He said he had rented a car to Phanindra for Rs.23,000 per month. The accused paid the rent for two months and then disappeared with the vehicle.Police said that while investigating the case, they came across many similar cases. His associates Satyanarayana and Venkatesh transported the stolen vehicles to East Godavari district, where they were resold at reduced prices.According to sub-inspector K. Shankar, a part of the investigating team, Phanindra was arrested from his office on Thursday morning. “We had received a tip about his presence and so, immediately reached the office and apprehended him,” the SI said. He had reportedly gone there to collect the documents of the vehicles he had stolen.Police said Phanindra, who had worked as a driver in Qatar in 2017, faced cases in Khammam as well as at Jagadgirigutta.Five students arrested for doing stunts with swordsHyderabad: Nacharam police arrested five students for performing stunts with swords in front of a place of worship. Police said they were filming reels for a social media site, at Chankyapuri Colony, Nachram. Senior officials confirmed that a case was registered under the Arms Act.Fire accident in a penthouse of a buildingHyderabad: A major fire broke out at a shop on the penthouse of a building in KPHB at around 8.20 pm on Thursday. No casualties were reported. KPHB sub-inspector Lingam said a stray firecracker fell on the building and some waste kept in the penthouse caught fire. Shop employees doused the fire.Tiffin centre found infestedHyderabad: The GHMC’s food safety wing said a case had been filed against Shiva Tiffin Centre following an online complaint by an X user, Ram, on February 4 that he found a cockroach in a plate of vada that was served to him. The GHMC assistant food controller said the case was filed after an inspection. Ram had also mentioned filing a complaint with the zonal commissioner.
