Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) on Wednesday announced that it would take strict action against people who illegally use motors on water tap connections to draw water. From April 15, the board will launch a special drive called “Motor-Free Tap Water” to stop such practices.HMWS&SB managing director Ashok Reddy said such use of motors disrupts water pressure and affects supply to other households. He warned that motors found during inspections would be seized immediately and a fine of Rs.5,000 would be imposed. Repeat offenders may also face police action. The water board has found that automatic and high-speed motors are being used in several areas, depriving households at the end of supply lines of adequate water. Though the board is supplying enough water, many people are facing low pressure because of these illegal practices. To tackle this, the drive will be conducted in four phases, during which officials will conduct door-to-door inspections. If a motor is found, the fine will be added to the consumer’s next water bill.A special mobile app has also been developed to monitor violations. Field staff can upload photos of illegal motor use, overflowing tanks, and water wastage. The app will also allow citizens to report such misuse directly in the future.
