WARANGAL(HANAMKONDA): A waste management crisis under the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) led to villagers from Madikonda and Rampur protesting in front of the Collectorate on Monday. The region, home to a population of around 11 lakh, generates approximately 450 metric tons of waste daily. For nearly two decades, the Madikonda dump yard has been the storage site for garbage, with over 7 lakh tons accumulated to date.Though bio-mining efforts to process 3 lakh tons of waste began in 2021, the slow progress has worsened the issue. Villagers allege that burning waste at the dump yard has led to severe health problems, particularly respiratory issues, as smoke spreads to nearby areas, including the textile park, Elkurthi, and the ring road.Villagers claim their repeated demands for relocating the dump yard have been ignored for years. On Monday, they held a rally in the city, raising awareness about the crisis, and staged a demonstration outside the Collectorate.A representation was submitted to district collector Praveenya, demanding the immediate relocation of the dump yard. Protesters warned that they would escalate their agitation if authorities fail to act, emphasizing their right to a cleaner and healthier environment. The situation remains tense, with villagers vowing to continue their fight until their demands are met.
