Vice-president Dhankhar emphasises inclusion and empowerment at Special Olympics

Underlining the indomitable human spirit, the Vice-President said, “History proves that disability has not tamed the human spirit. The human spirit is untameable. It always surfaces, no matter the enormity or extremity of challenges. This spirit is irrepressible.”Stressing the importance of sports in life, Dhankhar stated, “Sports is a language beyond dialects. It is a language beyond lexicons. Sports is universal, breaking all barriers and limitations defined by humanity. When it involves specially-abled individuals, it generates a new light of hope.”Highlighting the role of Divyangjan in nation-building and the emergence of an enabling ecosystem, Dhankhar said, “Specially-abled individuals play a crucial role in nation-building. Bharat, the world’s largest and most vibrant democracy, home to one-sixth of humanity, has embraced inclusivity in governance by ensuring and celebrating the participation of Divyangjan in the democratic process.”He added, “Bharat is a nation that extends a helping hand to generate hope, ensuring everyone leads a meaningful life.”Referring to affirmative steps taken under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Dhankhar noted, “The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, passed in 2016, and initiatives such as special queues, voting from home, Braille features on EVMs, and enhanced reservation from 3% to 5% in education are commendable steps in empowering Divyangjan.”He also highlighted the establishment of the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre (ISLRTC) in 2015 and the National Institute of Mental Health Rehabilitation (NIMHR) in 2019. “A Centre for Disability Sports is being set up in Gwalior to support specially-abled citizens of all types,” he added.
