Varsity part-time lecturers’ stir on April 17 to demand job security

WARANGAL: Part-time lecturers of 12 state universities in Telangana will hold a ‘Chalo Secretariat’ protest on April 17, demanding resolution to their long-pending issues.Releasing a poster here in Hanamkonda on Tuesday, Dr Y. Rambabu, president of the part-time lecturers’ association of Kakatiya University, demanded minimum time-scale salaries and job security for lecturers who have been serving for over 15 years.He emphasised that part-time faculty should be given priority in regular faculty recruitment and urged the government not to proceed with new appointments until their demands are addressed.Referring to G.O. No. 21, recently issued by the state government for university faculty recruitment, he called for amendments to include recognition of part-time teaching experience as valid service and stressed the importance of giving greater weightage to UGC NET and Ph.D qualifications.Dr Narendra Nayak, general secretary of the association, questioned the logic behind denying job security to lecturers who continuously worked for more than 15 years. “If part-time teachers are qualified enough to teach for years, why are they not qualified for permanent positions?” he asked,He called upon all part-time faculties from Kakatiya University to participate in the April 17 protest at the secretariat.
