LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh state has taken a giant leap in earning revenue from liquor sale during the last six years. While the state earned Rs 17,320 crore in 2017-18, it is now making Rs 41,250 crore from liquor sale with tipplers in the state shelling out Rs 115 crore every day and adding to the exchequer.
It is a considerable jump in excise revenue as compared to that of Rs 85 crore daily till two years ago.However, the jump in the annual excise revenue has pushed the state to occupy the top slot on the tally of top 10 states surpassing Karnataka which used to be on top during these six years.
The south Indian state earned a revenue of Rs 17,949 crore in 2017-18 and it went up to Rs 29,790 crore in 2022-23 while Uttar Pradesh garnered `41,250 crore from Rs 17,320 crore during the same period.After UP and Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Haryana figure in the list of top 10 states in terms of earning.
According to the officials, the consumption of liquor and beer in the state, has increased in almost all the districts of Uttar Pradesh during the past two-to-three years. The share of country liquor amounts for 45% to 50% of the total revenue generated across the state. The senior excise officials attribute the growth of excise revenue to multiple factors including higher social acceptability, improvement in standards of living and effective check on smuggling of liquor, among others.
Senior excise officials claim that switching to an end-to-end online regime for approvals and compliances brought more transparency in the trade and helped attracting new companies and players to the state. As per the data shared by the state excise department, almost every district of Uttar Pradesh registers liquor sale of Rs 2.5 crore to Rs 3 crore daily. According to a senior excise official, a number of districts are logging liquor and beer sale worth Rs 12 to Rs 15 crore a day.
The data shows that the NCR districts including Ghaziabad and Noida, lead the tally of liquor and beer sales followed by the tourist destinations like Taj city Agra, city of Nawabs Lucknow, and Varanasi. While Ghaziabad and Noida together record heavy sales to the tune of Rs 13 crore to Rs 14 crore daily, Agra sells liquor worth Rs 12 crore to Rs 13 crore every day followed by Lucknow selling Rs 10 -12 crore, Meerut Rs 10 crore, Kanpur Rs 8-10 crore and Varanasi Rs 6-8 crore per day.
Similarly, in Prayagraj, liquor and beer worth Rs 4.5 crore are sold in a day on an average. Significantly, drawing a comparison with neighbouring Haryana where the liquor is relatively cheaper, there has been an increase in excise revenue from Rs 6,786 crore in 2020-21 to Rs 9,687 crore in 2022-23. During the same span of time, Uttar Pradesh witnessed a rise of Rs 4,931 crore as the state had earned Rs 36,321 crore in 2021-22 and Rs 41,252 crore in 2022-23.
