University Teachers Push for Retirement Age Extension

Hyderabad: The Osmania University Teachers Association (OUTA) on Friday approached Prof. M. Kodandaram, MLC, and urged him to support their call for an increase in the retirement age of university faculty members.Prof. Kodandaram assured the association that he would present their request to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and work towards a favourable resolution. On Thursday, the Telangana University Teachers Association (TUTA) submitted a memorandum to Telangana University Vice Chancellor T. Yadagri Rao, urging him to forward a similar request to the state government.TUTA representatives highlighted the acute shortage of faculty in the state’s 12 universities. Of the 2,817 sanctioned posts, only 757 are filled, leaving nearly 75 per cent of positions vacant. They also underlined the urgent need to retain experienced professors, pointing out that two to three retirements occur monthly in key institutions such as Osmania University, JNTUH, Kakatiya University, and Professor Jayashankar Agricultural University. These consistent retirements, they warned, could jeopardise the universities’ NAAC accreditation and eligibility for UGC funding. The disparity in retirement policies was also criticised, with TUTA representatives noting that medical college professors and non-teaching university staff retire at 65 and 61, respectively, while university professors are still required to step down at 60.
