The Union Cabinet has approved the contentious “One Nation, One Election” Bill, according to multiple reports citing sources from the government. The bill, a pet project of the PM Modi-led BJP government, will pave the way for simultaneous elections across the country, from local bodies to the Lok Sabha. Former president of India and chairman of the high-level committee constituted to look into the feasibility of ‘One Nation, One Election’, Ram Nath Kovind, on Wednesday asked the Centre to come to a consensus on the initiative, emphasizing that the issue transcends political interests and serves the nation as a whole. The committee had in March, recommended simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies as the first step towards complete implementation of the initiative. This is to be followed by synchronized local body polls within 100 days.According to the recommendations submitted by the committee, simultaneous elections will require 18 amendments to existing laws, including 15 amendments to the Constitution.
