Several ‘accused’ stated that under the YSRC rule, CID chief PV Sunil Kumar had foisted cases against them, arrested and then tortured them in custody. The statements of the accused were registered in connection with a complaint filed by High Court advocate Gudapati Lakshminarayana to the Chief Secretary stating that Sunil Kumar violated the Constitution and guidelines during arrests and custody. “False cases were foisted against innocent people and then tortured in custody,” the advocate complained in September, 2022. The Criminal Law was exploited by the then CID chief. As the YSRC was the ruling party, action was not initiated against Sunil Kumar. After the TD Coalition government was voted to power, a CID inquiry was ordered. On Tuesday, Nellore CID officers registered Lakshmi Narayana’s statement. Based on this, TD media coordinator Darapaneni Narendra, Garlapati Venkateswara Rao of Dharanikota and senior journalist Kollu Ankababu’s statements were recorded. Garlapati recalled that police had barged into his house breaking the doors in the midnight. Later, they put me in custody for the entire night at the Guntur CID regional office in Guntur and thrashed me. “The next day, they produced me in the court. When I told the judge about the custodial torture, they sent me to the government hospital for medical tests. Garlapati was taken into custody following allegations that he had orchestrated a false campaign with regard to YSRC honorary president YS Vijayalakshmi’s resignation. I was tortured following orders from PV Sunil Kumar,” he said.TD media coordinator Darapaneni Narendra said he was taken into custody on October 13, 2022 by the CID, for allegedly orchestrating traction to a WhatsApp post stating that a key official in the CMO had connection with gold smuggling in Gannavaram airport. Later, the sleuths shifted me to the Guntur CID regional office. The then CID OSD Vijaypal, four other staff members ripped off my clothes and made me do wall-sit. The entire night, I was tortured. The CID did not produce any notices relating to 41A and produced me in the court on October 14. He also said that his torture was a result of Sunil Kumar’s orders. Senior journalist Ankubabu said he was arrested on October 22, 2022. They did not allow me to at least wear my shirt and just pulled me out of my house in the night. He too said that the 41A notices were not served to him. When a national media reporter questioned about me, Sunil Kumar said being a senior journalist, why could not he sit silently at his house. What is the need for social media for the senior journalist, Sunil Kumar asked.
