Hyderabad: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday carried out surprise checks in 10 government hostels across Telangana. The ACB teams were assisted by inspector legal metrology, sanitary inspector, food inspector and an auditor to check the quality, quantity of the food, sanitation conditions, students attendance particulars and hostels records. During searches, several irregularities were noticed in hostels. The student numbers were inflated while no proper hygiene was maintained in kitchens, storerooms, washrooms and toilets. Proper drinking water was not being supplied. According to ACB officials, there is no sufficient lighting and ventilation in rooms. The food menu is not being maintained and the students were supposed to be given egg and milk every day but denied. The bath rooms of girl’s hostels are not in a condition to be used. There are 18 types of registers or records to be maintained but none of them is being maintained. The wardens, who are supposed to be available in the hostels, are not found and they attend once a week or a month. There is a huge difference in weights of commodities compared to the registers. Misappropriation of funds in purchases was also noticed. In several places, the expired food items are being used. Overall, 10 teams participated in the searches. Officials said a report would be sent to the government on the erring officers for taking necessary action. Recommendations will also be sent to the government to improve the present status. The ACB conducted surprise checks in 10 hostels – Hostel for SC Boys at Jambagh, Hyderabad, Hostel for BC Boys at Medipally, Medchal-Malkajgiri district, Hostel for BCs Boys in Koyala Konda in Mahbubnagar district, Hostel for SC Girls at Tipparthi in Nalgonda, Hostel for ST Boys at Vemana Palli in Mancherial dist, Hostel for SC Boys, Ippalapali in Rajanna Sircilla district, Hostel for SC Girls in Jangoan district, Hostel for ST Boys, Karepalli in Bhadaradri-Kothagudem district, Hostel for BC Boys in Siddipet and Hostel for SC Girls at Kothagalli in Nizamabad.
