Telangana forms panel to formulate NRI policy

The two-year committee will focus on improving the living standards and addressing the hardships of workers in Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Noting that the Kerala government has successfully implemented a similar policy for its Gulf migrants, Telangana aims to replicate and customise these measures to mitigate the issues faced by its own migrant workers.Thousands of semi-skilled and unskilled workers from Telangana have ventured into Gulf countries in search of employment. However, the absence of a comprehensive NRI policy has left many facing significant hardships, including insufficient support during emergencies such as accidents or deaths, and difficulties in repatriating deceased workers to their native villages.Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has started this step to alleviate the problems encountered by these migrants. Along with Dr B.M. Vinod Kumar, the advisory committee comprises prominent figures including Gulf migrant workers activist Manda Bheem Reddy (serving as vice-chairman), Government Whip and Vemulawada MLA Adi Srinivas, former MLC T. Jeevan Reddy, Choppadandi MLA Medipally Satyam, Nizamabad rural MLA R. Bhupathi Reddy, and Telangana State Mineral Development Corporation chairman and former MLA Eravathri Anil Kumar. Additionally, Gulf migrant activists including Singireddy Naresh Reddy, Lizy Joseph, Chennamaneni Srinivas Rao, Kottala Satyam Nara Goud of Dubai, Guggilla Ravinder, and Swadesh Parikipandla have also been appointed as members of the committee. The committee will work under the coordination of the General Administration Department’s joint secretary of protocol, who is the member secretary of the committee. This move, formalised via Chief Secretary Shanti Kumari’s GO Ms No.57, dated April 10, 2025, underscores the government’s commitment to protecting and supporting its diaspora working abroad.
