Surprise checks of food outlets find several lapses

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on Wednesday warned eateries against compromising with public health by selling low quality food items. It said strict action will be taken against those violating food safety norms.Surprise inspections were conducted on Wednesday at several flour and sweetmeat shops in Suraram area under the Quthbullapur Circle in Kukatpally Zone. During the inspections, officials found poor quality food being prepared in unhygienic conditions.Basic rules such as labeling products with manufacturing and expiry dates were not adhered to. Workers were found handling food without wearing gloves, raising serious health concerns. The business owners were questioned about storing expired goods and violating safety standards.Officials said,“Public health is our priority. Consuming substandard food is leading to health issues like food poisoning, especially among children. They also asked people to be cautious about eating outside food.They also averred that inspections would continue to prevent the sale of unsafe food and asked parents to be extra-careful as children are more vulnerable to illnesses caused by such products.Officials including additional commissioner (health) Pankaj, food control assistant Muthyam Raju, food safety officer Lakshmi Kantham, chief medical officer Dr Padmaja and chief veterinary officer Dr Abdul Wakeel were part of the inspection team.
