New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday reprimanded Tamil actor-turned-politician S.V. Shekher for his “nasty campaign” of derogatory social-media posts against a woman journalist and granted him protection from arrest until the next hearing.A bench of Justices Surya Kant and N. Kotiswar Singh noted that, despite being convicted, Shekher has never offered a genuine apology. “You attacked her dignity directly, in such a brazen and abrupt manner,” Justice Kant told senior counsel Balaji Srinivasan. Although Shekher’s lawyer maintained that the message was forwarded inadvertently, deleted within an hour, and followed by a formal statement, the court observed that the Madras High Court had found no real contrition. Shekher has sought four weeks to approach the complainant and secure her acceptance of an unconditional apology. The Supreme Court allowed this request, directing him to desist from further public comments or harassment of the journalist and to comply with all legal protocols. The matter has been posted for hearing on August 7.
