KALABURAGI: While instances of school students being made to clean toilets on campus are becoming more commonplace, an incident in Kalaburagi has made the issue a little more serious.
Md Zameer, father of a Class 8 student at Maulana Azad Model English Medium High School on Malagatti Road in Kalaburagi, lodged a complaint with Roza police station on Saturday, accusing the principal, Johra Jubeen, of making students clean the school toilet, apart from cleaning the garden of her residence.
In his complaint, Zameer stated that his son and other students had told him that for the last several months, Johra used to get some of them to clean the school toilets, while some others were also made to clean the garden at her residence.
The complainant added that he went to the school last week and warned the principal not to use school students for such tasks, terming it “unethical”.
Despite the warning, Johra allegedly again asked Zameer’s son to clean her garden on Saturday.
Students, private schools instigated parents to file a complaint: Principal
As the boy did not return from school till 2 pm, Zameer contacted a schoolteacher and learnt that the principal had taken his son to her residence. When he called the principal’s mobile, her husband allegedly admonished him. Finally, he phoned the police helpline ‘112’ to get his son back, Zameer mentioned in the complaint.
It is also alleged that the principal used to threaten the students that they would be undressed and beaten, if they refused to do the work, Zameer said, claiming that Johra has collected Rs 100 from each student to give hall tickets and schoolbooks.
Meanwhile, denying allegations levelled against her to TNIE, Johra said she is a strict teacher, imparting lessons to students in a disciplined manner. Accordingly, a few students, wanting to shirk their studies, have falsely complained about her. Besides, some private schools in the vicinity of the Maulana Azad Model High School are accused of trying to tarnish the latter’s name, after 93 per cent of its students who appeared for the SSLC exams last year passed. Those schools might have instigated parents to complain, Johra alleged.
Confirming the receipt of a complaint against the principal, Kalaburagi Police Commissioner Chetan R said the police are yet to register an FIR. Chairman of the Karnataka State Commission for the Protection of Child Rights, Naganagowda, said the panel would register a suo motu case against the institution and serve notices to the Kalaburagi DC, Police Commissioner and the Secretary of the Minority Development Department.
