Speaking at an event organized to distribute allotment orders to 712 beneficiaries of the multi-storied housing project under the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board (TNUHDB) in Chennai on Wednesday, Stalin said that while the monthly assistance of Rs 1000 was also given to boys joining institutions of higher education under the ‘Tamil Pudalvan’ scheme, the girls had benefited a lot as they their education could have come to a halt after school.Overwhelmed by their gratitude for the scheme that had enabled them to continue education after school, the college girls were addressing him as ‘appa’ (daddy) that was a sign of the confidence that the people of the State had reposed on the DMK government.Similarly the free breakfast for school students was also not part of the manifesto but had helped a lot of children from poor homes, whose parents were unable to provide them food in the morning due to pressing commitments. The scheme had given a collective relief to the parents who were earlier worried about sending their children to school without giving them proper food and nutrition as the schools served free breakfast.It was on the same lines, the government had constructed the apartments for the benefit of poor people in North Chennai, which the government was keen on developing on par with the other parts of the city. Ever since the DMK government came to power, the TNUHDB had constructed 44,609 houses at a cost of Rs 5059 crore in 23 districts.The government had also renovated the old houses allotted to beneficiaries in the past, he said, adding that it was during the tenure of M Karunanidhi the Slum Clearance Board was first formed and that board had now become TNUHDB and continuing to build and also renovate dwellings for the poor people.Stalin called upon the beneficiaries who received allotment orders for the new house in Chandra Yogi Samadhi, Radha Krishnapuram and Sathyavani Muthu Nagar on Wednesday, to make use of the opportunity in a good way and continue supporting the government that had given them hope of a better future.
