NEW DELHI: Gangster Sachin Bishnoi, who was allegedly involved in the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, was extradited from Azerbaijan, officials of the Delhi Police said on Tuesday.
Officers from the Delhi Police’s Special Cell had travelled to the Azerbaijan capital Baku to monitor the progress in the case.
Bishnoi alias Sachin Thapan was successfully extradited from Baku, the officials said.
He is a relative of notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.
Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, popularly known as Sidhu Moosewala, was shot dead in Punjab’s Mansa district on May 29, 2022. The assailants fired over 30 rounds at Moosewala, who was found slumped in the driver’s seat by locals.
According to reports, Bishnoi who hails from Punjab’s Fazilka. was detained in Azerbaijan in August last year. A few days before Moosewala’s murder, Bishnoi fled the country using a forged passport.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) recently arrested Lawrence Bishnoi’s key aide Vikramjeet Singh alias Vikram Brar, after his deportation from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to India.
Meanwhile, Lawrence Bishnoi was brought to Delhi from a Gujarat jail and lodged in the national capital’s Mandoli prison. He has refused his involvement in Moosewala’s killing. On November 23 last year, the NIA arrested Bishnoi in a case related to an alleged conspiracy to recruit youth to carry out terror strikes in Delhi and other parts of the country.
Lawrence Bishnoi’s close aide Goldy Brar, who is said to be based in Canada, is also under investigation in the case. Police have issued a Red Corner Notice against Brar through Interpol.
Moosewala was murdered two days after the Punjab Police withdrew the security cover of 424 persons, including that of Moosewala.
Moosewala had fought an election from Mansa in the last Assembly election on a Congress ticket but was defeated by AAP’s Vijay Singla.
