NEW DELHI:  A retired Supreme Court judge, who was working as vice chairman of an apex court-appointed SIT on ‘black money’, has been slapped with Income Tax proceedings for “misreporting” income to the tune of Rs 1.06 crore.

In a 21-page assessment order, the Cuttack branch of the IT Department held that Justice (retd) Arijit Pasayat “filed his I-T return for the relevant assessment year on August 21, 2017, declaring a total income of Rs 2.20 crore”.

This included income from other sources such as arbitration work amounting to Rs 1.64 crore. “The assessee was required to explain the basis of declaration of professional income under the head ‘income from other sources’ instead of under the head ‘profits or gains of business or profession’,” the order said.

Justice Pasayat, however, “claimed income earned from services rendered by acting as arbitrator has been correctly shown under the head ‘income from other sources’”. However, unsatisfied with the explanation, the I-T officials have initiated proceedings against him.
