Hyderabad: Data from the IT and Industries department reveal that the BRS government, which ruled the state for almost 10 years, attracted investments totalling ₹24,528 crore during the World Economic Forum (WEF) summits at Davos between 2018 and 2023. In stark contrast, the incumbent Congress government has set a new benchmark, securing investments exceeding ₹2.19 lakh crore in Davos in just two years — 2024 and 2025. Although Telangana was formed in 2014, the BRS government began sending delegations to Davos only in 2018. The delegation was led by the then IT and industries minister K.T. Rama Rao in 2018, 2020, 2022, and 2023. No delegation was sent in 2019 due to the general elections, while the summit was cancelled in 2021 due to Covid-19. Notably, then Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao never attended any summit at Davos. His successor Revanth Reddy’s participation for two consecutive years has resulted in an unprecedented windfall for the state in terms of investments and jobs. Within a month after assuming office in December 2023, he participated in the WEF summit that was held in January 2024. His efforts led to MoUs worth ₹40,232 crore, a then-record for Telangana. This year, his delegation more than quadrupled it, securing investments worth ₹1,78,950 crore, which are expected to create 49,550 jobs. An analysis of the investments during the BRS tenure highlighted its relatively modest achievements. In 2018, the delegation signed just one MoU with Tech Mahindra, while the investment amount was not disclosed. In 2020, a ₹500 crore MoU was inked with Piramal Pharma. By 2022, 13 MoUs worth ₹4,128 crore were signed, and in 2023, nine MoUs totalling ₹19,900 crore were announced. The largest investment during the BRS era came from Microsoft, which proposed ₹16,000 crore for data centres in Hyderabad. Meanwhile, the Congress government secured mega deals, including ₹60,000 crore from Amazon, ₹45,500 crore each from Sun Petrochemicals and Tillman Global Holdings, and ₹15,000 crore from Megha Engineering. In fact, most MoUs have materialised. Of the 14 MoUs signed in 2024, covering 18 projects worth ₹40,232 crore, 17 projects are already grounded. Approximately, 10 of them are progressing rapidly while the remaining seven projects are in their initial stages. On the other hand, eight MoUs signed by the BRS government are under progress. IT and industry circles strongly feel that with a focused approach and strong leadership, the Congress government has set a new benchmark for attracting investments and driving the economic growth in Telangana.
