Residents from many colonies bear the brunt of sewage overflows

Hyderabad: Overflowing sewage water is becoming a common sight across localities in the city, even as they pose serious health risks and cause inconvenience to pedestrians and motorists alike. From colonies like Musheerabad and Banjara Hills to busy areas like Riyasatnagar, Santoshnagar and Saidabad, residents are struggling to bear the nauseating smell and stagnant sewage water flowing through roads and footpaths.Drainage water has been overflowing on the road from Musheerabad to Kavadiguda, which has many plywood and fabrication shops, spelling impending trouble for almost a day and half.Raghuveer, a shopkeeper, said, “The drains are very old and can’t handle the increasing population. Every time it rains, the drains overflow. Officials fixed it on Saturday afternoon after we complained many times, but there should be a permanent solution.”At Banjara Hills road no. 4, the road remains virtually wet the never ending stream of sewage water. The situation is so bad that customers stepping into shops have to struggle to enter shops. “If one wants to enter any shop, one has to step into this foul smelling sewage water and carry the muck inside. Despite 108 written complaints, the officials are not bothered to fix this public menace,” said Mubashir Ansari, a resident.A similar situation exists on Banjara hills road no. 14, where overflowing drains have become an everyday problem. In Riyasatnagar, under the Chandrayangutta constituency, sewage water is overflowing near the dargah of Hazrath Barhane Shah. Hundreds of devotees visit this site daily and the road is also used extensively. Still, the issue remains unresolved.“It’s sad that so many people, including public representatives, use this road every day but the problem remains ignored. The stench is unbearable and it’s difficult to even walk,” said Amjed Ali Khan, a local leader. At Crystal Ball in Santoshnagar division, sewage overflow is making matters worse for traffic.A local resident said, “This road leads to the main roads towards Owaisi junction and Saidabad. With the steel bridge construction already causing traffic jams, this overflowing sewage water is adding to the chaos.”Drainage water has been overflowing in the residential area of New Bhoiguda, causing inconvenience.R. Shankar, a local, said, “Whether it rains or not, we keep facing this drainage overflow. Officials come, clear the line temporarily and leave. But after a week, the problem is back to haunt us.”In Madannapet near Dhobi ghat x road, Saidabad, the condition is just as bad. Overflowing sewage water is flooding the roads, making it difficult for people to step out of their homes.“It’s become a daily struggle. We can’t even walk from our homes to the main road. The authorities must inspect the area, change the damaged manhole cover or at least do patch work to clear the mess,” said Muhammed Aftab, a resident. In his response, Amarender Reddy, director (operations), HMWS&SB, said, “We are trying to clear blocked sewerage lines and as part of the 180-day drive we have already cleared many sewerage lines and blockages. This has already helped reduce complaints. However, one major reason for these overflows is cellar constructions. During rains, water fills these basements and people use motors to pump it directly into the sewer lines, which lead to overflows.”
