Police lathi-charge to stop 'Nabanna Abhijan' protestors, BJP calls for strike



KOLKATA: Protesters clashed with the police in Howrah and Kolkata on Tuesday afternoon during the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ rally to protest the rape and murder of a young woman doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.The protestors marched towards the West Bengal secretariat, seeking the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the rape and murder of the junior doctor at the state-run hospital. They also pelted stones and bricks at the police officials on the spot and attempted to topple barricades blocking their way to the state secretariat.A cop attached to Chanditala police station was injured in the clash, PTI reported.The rally to the state secretariat was organised by the Student organisation ‘Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj’ and the ‘Sangrami Joutha Mancha’, despite the administration’s declaration of the event as illegal.At around 1: 30 pm, the protestors mainly youths, started the rally from two locations across the city.Clashes were reported first at Santragachi in Howrah where agitators broke one of the barricades and the police used batons on protesters and fired tear gas shells and water cannons. Scores of protesters then went to the Santragachi Railway Station and pelted stones at the police.
