NEW DELHI:  The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Friday declared the results of classes XII and X board exams. The board registered an overall pass percentage of 87.33 per cent in class XII. Last year, the pass percentage was 92.71 per cent. Of the 16,60,511 students who had appeared for the class XII board exams, only 14,50,174 students successfully cleared the examination.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a tweet congratulated the students. “I congratulate all the #ExamWarriors who have successfully passed the CBSE class XII examinations. I am proud of these youngsters for their hard work and determination. I also congratulate their parents and teachers for their monumental role in the success of the youngsters,” the Prime Minister tweeted. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also extended his congratulations and best wishes to CBSE class XII students. 

Girls outperformed boys with a pass percentage of 90.6 per cent this year.  The overall pass percentage of boys stood at 84.67 per cent. While girls outperformed boys in almost all states and Union territories, in Lakshadweep both girls and boys registered a 100 per cent pass percentage and in Mizoram, boys outperformed girls by 0.6 per cent.

The Thiruvananthapuram region recorded a pass percentage of 99.91 per cent. Bengaluru was a close second at 98.64 per cent.  Chennai came third at 97.4 per cent. Prayagraj registered the lowest pass percentage of 78.05. Delhi was at the fourth position at 93.24 per cent.

Among institutions, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas registered the highest percentage of students clearing the exam (97.51 per cent), the Central Tibetan School Administration came a close second with a pass percentage of 96.7 per cent, followed by Kendriya Vidyalayas at 92.51 per cent and independent schools at 87.95. Government schools lagged behind, with a pass percentage of 83.3 per cent.

The CBSE also announced that it will not award the first, second and third divisions to students, in order to avoid unhealthy competition among students. The board, however, added that it will award merit certificates to 0.1 per cent students who have scored the highest marks in subjects. The board also announced that it will begin the 2024 main examinations from February 15, 2024. 

The pass percentage of class X board exams too witnessed a minor drop this year. The overall pass percentage stood at 93.12 per cent as compared to 94.40 per cent in 2022. Of the total 21,65,805 students who appeared for the board exams this year, 20,16,779 managed to clear the exam. Girls outshone boys in class X exam, with a pass percentage of 94.25 per cent. Around 92.27 per cent boys cleared the exam.
