Tirupati: Allegations of corruption and administrative irregularities have surfaced across several panchayats in Nellore district. A routine audit has escalated into a comprehensive investigation, prompting district authorities to take decisive measures aimed at curbing mismanagement and restoring public confidence. The recent suspension of three panchayat secretaries and the revocation of cheque-signing powers for two sarpanches mark the latest development in this ongoing controversy. The district administration, acting under the directive of Collector O. Anand, has taken firm steps to address accusations of financial mismanagement and procedural violations. Secretaries from Regadichelika and Pemmareddypalem panchayats in Kodavalur mandal have been accused of fund misappropriation, failure to maintain accurate records, and unauthorised permissions. Preliminary inquiries revealed significant lapses in accountability, leading to their suspension, according to official sources. Beyond Kodavalur, irregularities have also come to light in Chejerla mandal, where funds earmarked for rural water supply and sanitation projects were reportedly mismanaged. Investigations into the village sarpanch uncovered discrepancies in the operation of purified water supply centres, further intensifying scrutiny. Similarly, in Prabhagiripatnam panchayat of Podalakur mandal, a panchayat secretary faced disciplinary action for negligence and financial misconduct. The issue appears far-reaching, with reports of malpractice emerging from other mandals, including Muthukur, Manubolu, and Atmakur. Public grievances have centred on the lack of transparency in the utilisation of public funds, with several residents alleging that their complaints were either ignored or inadequately addressed by district authorities. “We have taken swift action based on the Collector’s instructions. Secretaries and sarpanches found guilty of irregularities will face stringent consequences”, a district panchayat officer said. He also urged residents to report instances of corruption to expedite the investigation process. Since assuming office, Collector Anand has prioritised transparency and anti-corruption initiatives, resulting in heightened scrutiny of local bodies. Show-cause notices have been issued based on preliminary findings, and senior officials have been assigned to conduct further inquiries. While these measures underscore a robust response from the administration, the scope of irregularities uncovered so far raises pressing questions about systemic failures in oversight and the effectiveness of internal controls.
