HYDERABAD: An open drain at Deendayalnagar in Malkajgiri circle has been left unattended for two years, badly affecting business establishments in the area, allege the residents.

According to shopkeepers, drain water has been overflowing into their shops, preventing customers from entering, even after a light rainfall. They said the water, as high as three feet, entered the shop and damaged the property every time it rained.

However, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials claimed that lack of funds left the nala works incomplete, else they could have provided a permanent solution to the problem.

“I have been running a stationery shop in the area. Even during a light rainfall, about three feet of water enters the shop. I have been disconnected from the neighbourhood and my shop is left unapproachable,” B. Sreedhar, who runs a shop in Deendayalnagar, said.

G. Venu, owner of a bike repair shop in the locality, said, “I have been running this bike point for 12 years. For the past two years, I have been facing water-logging in the monsoon season. I am forced to close the shop until the water recedes. Despite numerous complaints lodged with the GHMC, it is yet to resolve the issue.”

When questioned about the same, executive engineer of Malkajgiri circle R. Laxman said multiple issues had been causing the delay in nala works. He said contractors went on a strike due to non-payments and added that utility shifting also played a spoilsport. Laxman said the water-logging issue could be resolved only with the release of funds by the GHMC.
