New Delhi: Available data from the Supreme Court and 25 High Courts reveal that only 11.94 per cent of the country’s sitting judges have made their asset disclosures public as of April 11, 2025. This transparency gap comes despite a recent Supreme Court resolution mandating that all serving judges and future appointments disclose their assets on the apex court’s website. The push for greater transparency was prompted by controversy over a massive cash stash allegedly discovered during a fire at Justice Yashwant Varma’s Delhi residence. While 30 of the 33 Supreme Court judges have reportedly submitted their asset details to the Chief Justice of India, the information remains pending upload on the court’s website. At the high court level, only 95 out of 762 judges (approximately 12.46 per cent) have disclosed their assets online. Notably, 18 High Courts, including major institutions like the Allahabad High Court — India’s largest with 81 serving judges — as well as the Bombay, Calcutta, Gujarat, and Patna High Courts, have yet to reveal any details regarding their judges’ assets. In contrast, the Kerala High Court leads in transparency, with 41 of its 44 judges (93 per cent) having declared their assets following the Supreme Court’s decision. Additionally, 11 of the 12 justices in Himachal, 30 out of 53 judges at the Punjab and Haryana High Court, and seven of 36 judges in Delhi have shared their financial details. The Madras High Court and the Chhattisgarh High Court have disclosed five and one judge’s information respectively.
