NZP Gears Up to Shield Wildlife From Summer Heat

Hyderabad: Nehru Zoological Park’s plans to protect its animals, birds and reptiles from the summer temperatures are facing a twist with the fluctuating weather conditions. As usual, last year, the zoo took several measures including installing sprinklers and foggers in enclosures, providing shaded shelters and covering bird cages with cooling materials like nutgrass to protect animals. Air conditioners and exhaust fans were set up in the nocturnal animal house, while coolers were arranged for chimpanzees, monkeys and carnivores. Khus khus thattis (cooling mats) were placed over enclosures to reduce direct sunlight and watered multiple times. To keep the animals hydrated, the zoo provided clean drinking water along with summer fruits for primates, birds and bears. Veterinary teams also gave supplements and thermo care liquid to help animals cope with the heat. For visitors, the zoo management arranged drinking water stations and shaded resting areas throughout the premises. Air-conditioned enclosures in select zones also offer relief from the heat. While this year’s summer preparations are yet to commence, zoo authorities are expected to implement these measures to keep the animals comfortable throughout the summer.
