No film will have a repeat value… Resul Pookutty on Kanguva

Kanguva, starring Suriya and Bobby Deol, was released to cinemas on November 14. It has received a mixed response from both fans and critics including Anand Deverakonda. As per some criticism, even though the fantasy-action movie has been acknowledged for its good visuals and acting, some individuals felt that the music was too loud and the background score was excessive. Meanwhile, award-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty has also contributed his voice to the discussion. In an Instagram post, Resul shared a long post where he wrote, “A friend of mine, a re-recording mixer send me this clip…. It is disheartening to see a review about sound in our popular films like this. Our craft and artistry caught up in the loudness war… who is to blame?! The sound guy?! or the innumerable fixes comes at the last moment to satiate all insecurities. High time our fraternity to put your foot down and say things loud and clear. No film will have a repeat value if the audience walk out with head ache!”The post stirred several discussions amongst the fans and netizens. While some defended Kanguva’s treatment of sound as necessary for the story, others voiced their agreement with Resul’s praise of the film. One poster remarked, “Some films have to have loud music because of the storyline, and I thought the music score suited Kanguva very well.” And in a wholly agreeable note to Resul, another poster wrote, “Very well said. It was quite a challenge to bear the film without the thought of deafness in the head”.It may be worth adding that Resul is one of those who tend to be very vocal about such things on social media. Earlier in 2022, he was in the news when he referred to Alia Bhatt’s character in RRR as a ‘dummy’.Created by Siva, Kanguva is an action draped fantasy film that showcases Suriya and Karthi in twin avatars. The role of the ruthless antagonist is essayed by Bobby Deol and Disha Patani plays the present timeline girlfriend of Suriya. With the arguments on sound design and its place in the film still fresh in industry, Kanguva’s furious storytelling and level of execution is what keeps it in the conversation.
