RAIPUR: A Naxalite was killed in an encounter with police in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district, an official said on Friday.

Three to four other Naxalites suffered injuries in the exchange of fire and arms, ammunition and other materials were also recovered from the encounter site, around 400 km from the state capital Raipur, he said.

The gunfight took place on Thursday night in a forest near Sirseti village under Kerlapal police station limits when separate teams of security personnel were out on an anti-Naxal operation, Sukma Superintendent of Police Sunil Sharma said.

Acting on specific inputs about the presence of a large number of Naxalites in hilly areas of Simel and Gogunda villages, teams of the District Reserve Guard (DRG), the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Special Task Force (STF) launched the operation, he said.

When one of the patrolling teams of the DRG was returning, armed Naxalites opened fire on security personnel, triggering the gun battle, he said.

After the guns fell silent, the body of a Naxalite along with arms and ammunition was recovered from the spot, the official said.

The identity of the deceased was yet to be ascertained, Sharma said.

On May 8, two Naxalites, including a woman, were gunned down in an encounter with police in the Bheji area of Sukma district.
