Hyderabad: The National Alliance of People’s Movements (NAPM) has strongly condemned the “inhuman and cruel treatment” meted out to Indian citizens by the US government led by President Donald Trump. It stated that in the history of deportation, this was “yet another new, cruel and shameful low and marks the beginning of another era of racist politics.”In a release the NAPM said, “All of this is happening against the backdrop of rising inequalities, which is used by right-wing, fascistic parties across the world to drum up an ‘anti-outsider’ sentiment.” It said Trump had used this sentiment in his election campaign. “The humiliation meted out to 104 Indian citizens returned on February 5, is a direct result of such retrograde politics which seeks to pit the working people of different countries against each other.”Condemning the “meek inaction” of the Indian government, the NAMP demanded that the Union government take measures to safeguard the fundamental human rights and labour rights of its citizens, both domestically and overseas. It wanted Prime Minister Modi, who will meet President Trump, to raise this issue strongly. It also wanted the Centre to register a formal protest with the United Nations.The mistreatment of Indian citizens by US authorities, prima facie, was against the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), 1976 and the United Nations Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhumane or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (1984).
