Nellore: Minister of social welfare Dr Dola Sri Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy has assured that the government was committed to support tobacco farmers in all possible ways during these challenging times. The minister, along with Santanutalapadu MLA B.N. Vijay Kumar, visited the tobacco auction centre in Pernamitta, Ongole, on Tuesday. During the inspection, they interacted with Tobacco Board officials to understand the pace of procurement and issues concerning pricing. Addressing the media, Dr Dola noted that a significant number of “no-bid” lots (tobacco lots that did not receive any bids) are causing distress among farmers. Reminding that tobacco auctions are completed in Karnataka, he urged for an expedited procurement process in Andhra Pradesh. He acknowledged the rejection of low-grade tobacco and promised to ensure justice for affected farmers. Dr Dola announced plans to hold a meeting with traders to resolve pricing issues and address the prevalence of no-bids. “Even in the past, our government has stood by the farmers during tough times. We will continue to extend full support and ensure that farmers do not suffer losses,” he affirmed. The minister also engaged directly with farmers and traders, reviewed the quality of tobacco being brought to market and emphasised the government’s commitment to securing remunerative prices. He assured that the concerns of tobacco growers would be taken to the notice of the Chief Minister.
