Hyderabad: Chicken and mutton shops did brisk business in twin cities on Tuesday on account of Sankranti festival. Long queues were seen at almost all the meat shops in Secunderabad and Hyderabad with a large number of people purchasing mutton and chicken in high quantities to celebrate the festival with their families and friends on a grand note. Sensing that more customers would buy meat in connection with the festival, the shoppers brought additional stock from Ziaguda, Bhoiguda and Chengicherla wholesale markets. The retail shops in Rezimental Bazaar in front of Secunderabad railway station, Chilkalguda, Panjagutta and Malkajgiri, among other areas teemed with customers from 6.30 am. The cost of one kg chicken with skin was sold for Rs.160, while the skinless for Rs.210 and boneless for Rs.220. The mutton prices, however, hovered between Rs.850 and Rs.1,100 per kg. Without considering the cost, the people purchased meat to enjoy the festival by cooking special non-vegetarian dishes apart from lip-smacking biryani followed by sweets and ice-cream.
