Market Opening Bell: Indian benchmark indices opened in the red on Tuesday, i.e. March 4, 2025, tracking weak global cues. While the 30-share BSE Sensex dipped 268.6 points or 0.36 per cent at 73,085.94, the NSE Nifty 50 fell 144.85 points or 0.65 per cent to open below 22,000, i.e. 21,974.45 in the opening trade. The Sensex closed at 73,085.94 and Nifty 50 at 22,119.3 in the last trading session.
The Nifty is trading at a nine-month low or at its lowest level since June 5, 2024.
From the Sensex pack, HCL Tech, Adani Port, Nestle India, Infosys and IndusInd Bank were among the biggest laggards in the opening trade, with HCL Tech losing over 1.68 per cent. On the other hand, only two stocks were in the green in the opening trade – ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank. While ICICI Bank was up 46 per cent, HDFC Bank gained 0.37 per cent.
In early trade, 1,629 stocks in the Nifty pack were trading in the red, while 649 were trading in the green. Seventy stocks remained unchanged.
What does Gift Nifty indicate?
Earlier, Gift Nifty, an early indicator for equity market indices, indicated a negative start for the Nifty 50 as it opened lower at 22,102 against the previous close of 22,128 on Monday.

The S&P 500 declined around 2 per cent at the end of the session, and the Nasdaq 100 slid 2.2 per cent.
At the time of writing the news, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index was down by 108.24 points or 0.47 per cent, and Japan’s Nikkei 225 skidded 718.70 points or 1.90 per cent. Similarly, South Korea’s Kospi fell 2.27 per cent or 0.12 per cent. Also, China’s Shanghai Composite was in the red.
How did individual sectors perform?
Major Nifty sectoral indices traded in red, with Nifty IT falling around 1.18 per cent. The Nifty Auto was down by 1.10 per cent and Nifty Metal was down by 1.11 per cent. Similarly, the Nifty Bank Index was down by 0.26 per cent and Nifty Metal fell 1.11 per cent in the opening trade.
