Market Opening Bell: Sensex down over 250 points, Nifty below 22,900


Market Opening Bell: The 30-share BSE Sensex opened 266.34 points, or 0.35 per cent, lower at 75,672.80.

Market Opening Bell: Indian benchmark indices opened lower on Thursday, February 20, 2025, amid US President Donald Trump’s tariff threats and weak global cues. The 30-share BSE Sensex opened 266.34 points, or 0.35 per cent, lower at 75,672.80, and the NSE Nifty 50 fell 98.10 points, or 0.43 per cent, to 22,834.80 in the opening trade.

From the Sensex pack, Mahindra & Mahindra, ITC, HDFC Bank and Zomato were among the major losers. Adani Ports, Infosys, Reliance, Asian Paint and Axis Bank were the biggest gainers in the opening trade. 

In the Nifty pack, 957 stocks were trading in the green, while 1,378 stocks were trading in the red. 57 stocks remained unchanged.  

What Gift Nifty Indicated?

Earlier, Gift Nifty, an early indicator for equity market indices, indicated a tepid muted start for the Nifty 50. At 7:15 AM, Gift Nifty was seen trading at 22,909.

Asia Markets Today

Meanwhile, Japan’s Nikkei 225 was down 678.63 points or 01.73 per cent and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index fell by 336.31 points or 1.47 per cent. Almost all Asia-Pacific markets opened lower, with South Korea’s Kospi falling 15.95 or 0.68 per cent. 
 
How did individual sectors perform?

Almost all major Nifty sectoral indices opened in red with Nifty Bank falling 0.38 per cent. The Nifty Realty Index was down by 0.40 per cent and Nifty Pharma was down by 0.10 per cent. However, the Nifty Metal Index gained 0.30 per cent in the opening trade.

Stock Markets on Tuesday

Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty ended marginally lower in a volatile trade on Wednesday dragged by blue-chip IT stocks.

The 30-share BSE benchmark Sensex dipped 28.21 points or 0.04 per cent to settle at 75,939.18. Intra-day, it hit a high of 76,338.58 and a low of 75,581.38, gyrating 757.2 points.
