Mangaluru: A 47-year-old Mangaluru resident died by suicide, blaming MCC Bank president Anil Lobo as responsible for his act.Manohar Pereira (47), residing with his elder brother Melburn Pereira, in a house purchased around 10 years ago in Permanki village with a loan from MCC Bank. Due to financial difficulties during the COVID-19 period, Melburn Pereira was unable to pay the loan installments, leading to the bank seizing the house two years ago. This caused severe mental distress to Manohar Pereira, who also suffered two heart attacks during this period. Later, in February 2023, Sister Christine from a charitable organization transferred Rs 15 lakhs to Manohar Pereira’s bank account. Using this money, the deceased, in coordination with MCC Bank’s president, Anil Lobo, attempted to repay the loan and recover the house. It is alleged that despite this repayment effort, Anil Lobo withdrew Rs 9 lakhs from the deceased’s account using a self-check. The outstanding loan amount remained unpaid, leading to further mental distress for the deceased. The house was handed back to the family around six months ago for their residence, but the financial burden persisted. On December 17 afternoon between 3:45 PM and 5:00 PM, Manohar Pereira reportedly hanged himself in his house. Before taking this step, he recorded a video on his mobile phone and circulated it on WhatsApp to several groups and individuals. In the video, he is heard speaking in Tulu and allegedly accusing MCC Bank president Anil Lobo, stating, “Anil Lobo of MCC Bank is responsible for this. He seized my house, and despite paying Rs 15 lakhs, Rs 9 lakhs was withdrawn from my account,” he alleged.“Based on a complaint filed by the deceased’s brother, a case has been registered at Mangalore Rural Police Station for offenses punishable under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. A detailed investigation is underway to verify the allegations and establish the facts surrounding the incident. In this case Anil Lobo has been arrested and further investigation taken up,” City Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal stated in a press statement.
