Mangaluru: Mangaluru International Airport has enhanced its emergency response capabilities with the commissioning of pressurized fire hydrant points along the steep valley adjacent to runway 06/24.This upgrade will bolster the effectiveness of the Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) team in managing aviation emergencies in the valley area.In response to safety recommendations from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the airport has installed the new fire hydrant system. The ARFF team will now have improved access to these critical firefighting resources.”Our focus at Mangaluru Airport is to ensure a safe and smooth experience for passengers. These new hydrants will further reduce the ARFF response time during emergencies and enable more efficient handling of such situations,” stated an airport spokesperson in a press statement. The modernization effort includes the installation of a 280-meter Galvanized Iron (GI) pipeline down the slope, replacing the previous PVC pipeline, which was susceptible to damage. The new system features two hydrant points: one located in the middle of the valley slope and the other at the base, near Adyapady Road. Both points are connected to a 25,000-liter water storage tank situated behind the localizer in the Runway End Safety Area 24, adjacent to the apron perimeter road.A 20HP automated pump will maintain a consistent 6 bar pressure at the hydrant points, ensuring adequate pressure even with multiple hoses in use.”The commissioning of this upgraded firefighting system outside the airport boundary wall underscores our commitment to meeting DGCA regulations and enhancing safety standards,” the spokesperson added.
