Lyricist Anantha Sriram calls for boycott of films misrepresenting Hinduism

Hyderabad: At the “Haindava Sankharavam” meeting organised by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad in Kesarapally near Gannavaram, renowned lyricist Anantha Sriram expressed concern over the way Hinduism is often depicted in Indian cinema. He mentioned the recent blockbuster Kalki 2898 AD.Sriram pointed out that the Ramayana and Mahabharata, cornerstones of Hindu literature, are frequently misinterpreted for entertainment purposes. He specifically criticised the portrayal of characters like Karna in certain films, questioning how a figure who remained silent during Draupadi’s disrobing could be presented as a truly noble character.Sriram urged Hindus to boycott films that misrepresent or undermine Hindu values and beliefs. He highlighted the dual nature of filmmaking – commercially creative and creatively commercial – suggesting that this inherent commercialism often leads to deliberate misinterpretations of Hindu mythology.Sriram also advocated for government intervention, suggesting that films that denigrate Hinduism should be banned. However, he emphasised that even if such a ban is not implemented, Hindus should actively boycott films that misrepresent their faith.
