Liquor ban at Ayyavaripalle village in Shadnagar brings cheers on villagers’ faces

Hyderabad: Ayyavaripalle, a tiny village near Shadnagar in erstwhile Mahbubnagar district, imposed a complete liquor prohibition from January 26, 2025. Fed up with the nuisance of liquor consumption through belt shops in the village, the villagers passed a unanimous resolution imposing a ban on sale and consumption of liquor. Flexi boards were also put at the gram panchayat office and village entrance informing that hefty fines would be imposed against those violating the liquor ban order. Since the implementation of the order, all those who used to consume liquor stopped fearing that they would be forced to pay a fine. Any belt shop found to be selling against the order, must pay a fine of Rs.50,000, while those consuming should pay Rs.20,000. Anyone disclosing information against those selling liquor and consuming it would get Rs.10,000 as a reward, confirmed Ayyavaripalle village former Sarpanche P Ramesh told Deccan Chronicle on Monday. The villagers are now heaving a sigh of relief after imposing a liquor ban. Frequent quarrels and nuisance used to be common sights in the village everyday with most of them starting consuming liquor at 7 am. Those who return from their work place in the evening would directly visit the belt shop to consume liquor instead of reaching home and quality time with their family members. In spite of family members repeatedly requesting them not to consume liquor and focus on their welfare, most of them did not budge. Perturbed over this, villagers conducted a meeting and discussed in detail the consequences being faced by families due to consumption of liquor. After a thorough discussion, the villagers passed a unanimous resolution to ban liquor. They conducted ‘Dandora’, the traditional form of announcement in the villages, to explain to people about the consequences to be faced for violating the order. “We are now witnessing a peaceful atmosphere in the village as the situation has changed from January 26. We achieved success in executing our decision effectively with the support of all villagers,” Ramesh added.
