Karnataka Tourist Recalls Horrific Moment

Bengaluru: A vacation to Anantnag in Jammu and Kashmir to celebrate the success of their son in an exam turned out to be tragic for the family of Manjunath Rao, 47, a contractor and realtor belonging to Shivamogga city in Karnataka. Rao was gunned down by militants at Pahalgam in front of his wife Pallavi and son on Tuesday.The family left for Anantnag on April 19 to celebrate the performance of his son in the second pre-university examination, for which results were announced a couple of days prior. The family was to return on April 24.Pallavi told mediapersons over the phone from Pahalgam that after the terrorists shot Rao, she had asked them to kill her and their son too.Pallavi, manager of the Malnad Areca Marketing Cooperative Society in Birur, Chikkamagaluru, told Deccan Chronicle over the phone she was not in a position to speak.While condemning the attack on tourists and killing of Rao, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said, “We are closely monitoring the developments. All necessary support will be extended and the state government stands firmly with those affected.”Siddaramaiah stated two teams—one of senior officers and another of police personnel—had left for Kashmir. An adventure team from the sports department, led by its commissioner, Chethan, was also on its way to the site.Shivamogga Lok Sabha member B.Y. Raghavendra visited the residence of Rao in Shivamogga and consoled the bereaved family members.
