GUWAHATI: Out on bail, Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani made a blistering attack on the BJP, alleging that his arrest was a conspiracy by the party to harass him.He told journalists in Assam that his tweet did not merit the registration of an FIR by the police.“It was a conspiracy against me. In the first place, the FIR shouldn’t have been registered against me,” Mevani said.“Modiji (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) was coming to Gujarat and I said he should make an appeal for the maintenance of peace and harmony in the riot-hit areas. So what was the need for the filing of the FIR against me?” he asked.Talking about the second case registered against him based on the FIR lodged by a woman sub-inspector of police, he wondered how much pressure the government must have exerted on her.He said the BJP government wanted to harass him but he did not feel harassed.“You are not arresting Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi, Vijay Mallya who all scammed thousands of crores of rupees and fled the country. This speaks volumes about the conduct of the government,” Mevani said.He said a message had gone to the entire country that he was targeted by the BJP as he believed in the Constitution.“My fight against Modiji, RSS and BJP will continue. I will fight for truth and for the people of Gujarat. There are protests going on in Gujarat. There is a jail bharo andolan programme across Gujarat tomorrow,” the MLA said.He expressed gratitude to all ranks and files of the Congress in Assam for supporting him. He also said that the constables of Assam police were “quite cooperative”. He added that he would keep visiting Assam and learning the Assamese language. The district and sessions court, Barpeta granted him bail on Friday in the second case after observing that the FIR was “falsely registered”. Earlier, he was granted bail by the court of chief judicial magistrate, Kokrajhar in the first case which pertained to his tweet.
