Mangaluru: The internal discord within Karnataka BJP is escalating as state president B.Y. Vijayendra faces mounting resistance from within his own party. Senior leaders, including Chikkaballapur MP and former health minister Dr. K. Sudhakar, have openly voiced discontent, signaling a deepening divide.Unlike his father, former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, who commanded near-total control over the state BJP, Vijayendra has struggled to establish similar authority. His leadership style—marked by appointing loyalists to key positions—has not sat well with several senior leaders, leading to factionalism.Legacy and Leadership ChallengesFor decades, Yediyurappa was the undisputed leader of Karnataka BJP, building a strong Lingayat vote base and controlling candidate selection. His critics hesitated to challenge him directly, fearing political isolation. However, his gradual withdrawal from active politics has emboldened opposition within the party, particularly led by Basangouda Patil Yatnal.Previously a lone critic of Yediyurappa, Yatnal has now found support from other leaders who question Vijayendra’s authority. Resentment intensified over the last parliamentary elections and recent internal party polls, where Vijayendra’s camp attempted to install loyalists in key positions—alienating MLAs, former ministers, and even members of the Yediyurappa faction.BJP High Command Faces Tough DecisionThe party’s central leadership now faces a dilemma: ensuring stability while addressing the growing unrest.
