Koppal: In a significant boost to the Indian Grey Wolf (Canis lupus pallipes) population, a female wolf at the Bankapur Wolf Sanctuary in Koppal district has given birth to five pups. This comes just a month after another wolf in the same sanctuary delivered eight pups, signaling a positive trend in conservation efforts.
Forest, Environment, and Ecology Minister Eshwar Khandre stated that the estimated wolf population in the sanctuary has now risen to around 40-45. To ensure the safety of the newborn pups and prevent human disturbance, surveillance cameras have been installed near their dens, and strict anti-poaching measures are in place.
He expressed happiness and highlighted the Karnataka Forest Department’s dedicated efforts to protect the 332-hectare sanctuary, which falls under the Gangavati regional forest division. The minister stated that the reserve, with its natural caves and rugged terrain, provides a safe habitat for wildlife, contributing to the wolves’ increasing numbers.
The sanctuary is home to various species, including leopards, peafowls, hyenas, jackals, hares, and porcupines.
