India raises concern over mistreatment of deportees from US

The United States has informed India about 487 individuals who have received deportation orders and are believed to be Indian nationals. Out of these, the nationality verification process is currently underway for 295 individuals. Once their identities are confirmed, they will also be deported.Responding to a question on whether India had formally protested the use of handcuffs and chains on deportees, Misri confirmed that India had raised its concerns, similar to actions taken by Brazil and Colombia. He was also asked whether the previous Congress-led UPA government had protested the use of restraints on deportees since 2012. He replied that there was no official record of such protests.Misri noted that while deportations from the US were not new, this particular operation was different from previous ones. The US had classified it as a “national security operation,” which explained why a military aircraft was used for transportation. He assured that India would explore other alternatives for future repatriations.Rejecting claims that India was uncooperative in accepting deportees, Misri clarified that every country has legal and security requirements when taking back its nationals. He stressed that India follows the same process with all countries, including the US, ensuring that deported individuals are indeed Indian citizens before allowing their return.
