HYDERABAD: The report ‘Posters, banners mar public spaces’, published on September 24 in Deccan Chronicle, has prompted the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to impose a city-wide ban on unauthorised posters, banners, and wall writings. The report had highlighted how despite the GHMC’s beautification efforts, public spaces continued to be defaced by political, commercial advertisements and religious announcements. On Friday, the GHMC directed deputy commissioners to convene meetings with local printers to ensure that they do not print posters without prior permission from the GHMC commissioner. The civic body has also mandated coordination with film theatre owners to prevent the affixing of movie posters on public walls. Any violations will result in penalties and all deputy commissioners are required to submit detailed reports on enforcement actions taken, including fines levied for unauthorised banners, posters, cutouts, and flex boards. This enforcement drive is expected to bring about immediate changes to the city’s landscape.
