The Indian Army’s 10 Corps is stationed at Bathinda and the Quick Reaction Teams were activated. The area was cordoned off and sealed. The search operations are in progress, the army stated.

Sources said that a high alert has been sounded and the police and other agencies have also been intimated about the incident.

A senior Punjab Police official said that it seems to be a case of fratricide and our officers are in touch with the military authorities.  “It does not seem like a terror attack,” he added.

As an INSAS rifle from the unit and some rounds of ammunition had gone missing from the unit premises two days ago. “An inquiry will be ordered in the matter to establish the facts of the case and fix responsibility,” an officer said.
