Visakhapatnam: Encroachment of footpaths in Visakhapatnam, including at major junctions and markets, is adding to the traffic chaos in the city.Attempts are frequently made by Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) and other authorities to remove the encroachers from the footpaths. But they are back with their temporary baggage and structures, reportedly with the influence of their area’s corporators. Footpaths along main roads in Visakhapatnam have become prime marketing locations for a wide range of vendors. The obstruction caused by shops on either side forces pedestrians to walk on the roads, significantly hampering vehicular movement. Areas’ people have expressed concerns about the apparent negligence of GVMC officials and traffic police in addressing the issue.Vendors have claimed footpaths in high-traffic areas, such as Jagadamba and Poorna Market, limiting access to pedestrians and leading to chaotic vehicle parking. Over half of the recently widened roads have been encroached upon, narrowing the thoroughfares. Additionally, cellars in large commercial complexes are being used for storage, instead of parking. As a result, customers visiting these complexes often park their vehicles on the road, exacerbating traffic congestion.The problem at Poorna Market gets more pronounced at the beginning of a month. This is the time when substantial numbers of individuals from surrounding mandals and locals converge on Poorna Market to purchase essential household items and commodities. Main roads and commercial areas experience significant crowding, particularly between Jagadamba and Poorna Market junctions. Despite the severity of the situation, residents say both traffic police and GVMC authorities are unresponsive. However, GVMC officials assert they are actively addressing complaints related to footpath encroachments in the town. They conduct regular meetings with shop owners and collaborate with traffic police to take necessary measures against encroachments. Legal action is initiated against individuals who establish permanent structures on footpaths.
