Udupi: Dragon boat race enthusiasts from various parts of the country will be in Udupi to participate in the 11th national dragon boat championship to be held from February 23 to 26.

The championship is organized by the Udupi district administration in collaboration with the Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association.

The dragon boat race has gained worldwide recognition as a popular competitive sport. The event will be inaugurated in the evening on Thursday.

About 700 participants from 15 different states will attend the race to be held in Suvarna (Madisala) River of Udupi district, Udupi MLA K Raghupathi Bhat told reporters.

The event, being held for the first time in Udupi, will also provide a pathway to eligibility for the Asian Games in September/October 2023. It will also give an opportunity to explore the prospects of organizing water sports championships in Udupi district.

“The championship will feature 200 meters, 500 meters, and 2 km races,” Bhat said.

Seven boats that can accommodate 12 people and four boats that can accommodate 22 people have already arrived at the venue.

The championship in Udupi has seen an overwhelming response from all participants, and the arrangements for two access roads and ample space for viewers have been properly organized in Heroor.

Water sports is one of the major attractions in the coastal district of Udupi. The new event of Dragon Boat race could open new opportunities and boost tourism.
